Why are Air Springs Made of Rubber?
1. High Elasticity and Flexibility

Technology Enhancement: Vulcanization or an inner lining (such as butyl rubber) can further enhance sealing.
3. Fatigue Resistance and Durability
Dynamic Load Adaptability: Rubber resists crack growth during
frequent compression/rebound cycles (for example, natural rubber
can withstand flexion cycles exceeding one million times).
Environmental Stability: Through formulation adjustments (such as the addition of antioxidants and antiozonants), it can resist UV rays, oil stains, and temperature fluctuations (-40°C to 80°C).
4. Damping Properties
Vibration and Noise Reduction: The viscoelasticity of rubber
absorbs vibration energy (the damping coefficient is typically
0.05-0.25), reducing mechanical shock and minimizing vehicle
jolting.
5. Lightweight Advantages
Low Density: Rubber density is approximately 1.1-1.2 g/cm³,
significantly lower than metal (7.8 g/cm³ for steel), reducing
suspension system weight and improving energy efficiency.
6. Design Flexibility
Easy Molding: Molding allows for complex structures such as bellows
and sleeves (such as single- or multi-convoluted bellows) to
accommodate various installation spaces.
Material Composites: It can be reinforced with cord layers (polyester or nylon) to withstand higher pressures (for example, commercial vehicle air springs can reach pressures of 8-10 bar).
Limitations Compared to Other Materials: Metals (such as steel): They lack elastic deformation and are heavy.
Plastics (such as polyurethane): Poor air tightness and fatigue resistance, and prone to brittleness at low temperatures.
