1) Description of Double Helical Gear
Double helical gears are gear structures formed by combining two helical gears with opposite helix directions
side by side along the face width. Their tooth surfaces are in a "herringbone" shape, which is
why they are also known as herringbone gears. By integrating left - hand and right - hand helical gears,
the axial forces generated during the transmission of single helical gears are effectively cancelled out.
2) Feature of Double Helical Gear
a) Axial Force Balance: The axial forces generated by the left - hand and right - hand tooth surfaces cancel each other out.
There is no need for additional axial force balancing devices, which reduces the load on bearings and improves the stability
and reliability of the transmission system.
b) High Load - Bearing Capacity: Compared with spur gears and
single helical gears, double helical gears have a higher contact
ratio.
Multiple teeth are engaged simultaneously, enabling them to withstand greater loads.
They are suitable for high - power transmission applications.
c) Smooth Transmission: Due to the gradual engagement and
disengagement of the teeth and the high contact ratio,
the impact and vibration during transmission are minimized, resulting in smooth operation and low noise.
3) Working Principle of Double Helical Gear
During the operation of double helical gears, the left - hand and right - hand tooth surfaces of the driving gear respectively
push the corresponding tooth surfaces of the driven gear. The axial forces generated by the left - hand and right - hand helical teeth
are in opposite directions and cancel each other out, with only torque being transmitted. Through the meshing of the teeth,
the rotational motion and power of the driving shaft are transferred to the driven shaft, achieving the conversion of speed and torque.
4) Application of Double Helical Gear
They are commonly used in high - power and heavy - duty mechanical transmission systems, such as the propulsion systems of large ships,
steel rolling mills in the metallurgical industry, and reducers in mining machinery. These devices require the transmission of significant power
and have high requirements for the load - bearing capacity and smooth transmission of gears.
The characteristics of double helical gears can well meet these requirements.
