Aftercooler separator (often referred to as an air compressor aftercooler or moisture separator) is a device used in compressed air systems to cool the hot compressed air and remove moisture and contaminants before the air enters downstream equipment.


Function:


1. Cooling Compressed Air – After compression, air is hot (often 150–350°F). The aftercooler reduces the temperature to near ambient levels.


2. Condensing Moisture – As air cools, water vapor condenses into liquid, which is then separated and drained.


3. Removing Contaminants – Oil droplets, particulates, and other impurities are also separated.


Types of Aftercooler Separators:


1. Air-Cooled Aftercooler – Uses ambient air to cool compressed air via a heat exchanger (common in smaller systems).


2. Water-Cooled Aftercooler – Uses circulating water for cooling (more efficient for high-capacity systems).


3. Separator/Filter Element – Often includes a coalescing filter or centrifugal separator to remove moisture and oil.
